I Saw You

I saw you at Sparro
Eating a slice of what they serve

I knew it was you for the way the grease licked your fingers
For the way you would take a bite
Then another bite
An equally big bite before you would chew the first

There was no soda
Nothing to wash it down
Or wipe your hands

The fact that you were at Sparrow made me wonder
What you meant when you said were you a foodie
And a feminist

The fact that you were at a Sparrow so far from your apartment
Made me wonder
What you meant when you said you were busy
And not feeling well
And out of town

It made me think I should have brought a dictionary to our first date
Or a mind-reader

If you had looked up you would have seen there I was there, too
Eating a slice of what they serve
Letting the grease lick my fingers

The cheese had no chance
